Main EnterenceThe original West doorway was remodelled around the fifteenth century by the insertion of a limestone arch and orders.
Over the doorway can be seen the carving which was thought to be part of an effigy, while the decoration it crowns formed part of an archway. The pieces were coupled together during the conservation work of 1929. Notice the sandstone to the right of the door in the picture which was part of the original doorway. |
ButtressesThere are a four buttresses on the south wall to add support and reinforcement to the wall. Three of these are were not original parts of the abbey and are thought to have been added in the fifteenth century. There is a noticeable difference in the stone being a Cyclopean type as opposed to the random rubble type in the walls. One of the buttresses has started to separate from the wall.
